Love Is All You Need

All you need is love….love is all you need, goes the lyrics to the timeless song by the Beatles, “All You Need is Love.”

Yesterday Mary and I went to the Korean shopping mall called, City Center, in the heart of Korea Town.

We sat with our strong Korean coffee at one of its little tables.

Minutes later, a Korean woman well into her 70’s with a halting limp and cane sat feet away from us.

Minutes later, her husband, also with a cane and weak legs sat with her.

I greeted them, and as we have discovered many times, this couple could speak no more than a dozen words in English.

Imagine, Mary and I only speak two in Korean.

Back and forth, we went struggling to communicate.

Much of the time there was a stark silence.

The woman then performed the greatest act of love she could.

Pulling out a packet of Extra Gum, she offered two sticks to us.

I don’t eat gum so Mary had both of them.

This was her way of communicating.

Minutes later  we understood that as nice as these people were, the language barrier was too great.

We bowed, smiled, and got up.

The woman muttered something, as she fumbled nervously in her purse.

She pulled three more sticks of gums and hurriedly gave them to Mary, smiling.

Deeply touched we gave them our business card.

The multitudes around you and I are just seeking someone who would reach out to them.

All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love. Love is all you need.
All you need is love. (All together now).
All you need is love. (Everybody).
All you need is love, love. Love is all you need.
Love is all you need.
Love is all you need
